Donald Leo
The Hon. Donald Leo is an Acting Justice of the Kings County Supreme Court, Criminal Term in the Second Judicial District of New York. He was designated to the Supreme Court bench in 2018 by the Hon. Lawrence K. Marks, Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York. Justice Leo has also sat as a judge for the Kings County Criminal Court since his appointment to the seat by Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2015. He was reappointed to the Criminal Court by Mayor de Blasio in 2019.
Leo graduated with his B.A. in political science and art history from New York University in 1988. He went on to earn a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 1991.
After graduating from law school, he joined the New York County District Attorney's Office, where he served as an assistant district attorney assigned to its Trials Division and Sex Crimes Unit. He remained with the D.A.'s office until 2004.
It was at that time, Leo became managing director of Fortress Global Investigations, where his responsibilities included managing the corporation's business development.
By 2007, Leo was working as an assistant attorney general with the New York State Attorney General's Office. During his tenure there, he became the deputy bureau chief of its Sex Offender Management Bureau. Leo held that position until his appointment to the Criminal Court bench in 2015.
His memberships include the Asian American Bar Association of New York, the Association of the Judges of the Criminal Court of the City of New York, the Asian American Judges Association of New York, the Bay Ridge Lawyers Association, and the New York City Bar Association. He has also served on the New York State Supreme Court's Committee on Character and Fitness.
Justice Leo, born and raised in New York City's Chinatown, resided in Brooklyn at the time of his appointment to the bench.
