Trial Advocacy Program
AABANY and NAPIPA are proud to present the 2023 Trial Advocacy Program ("TAP") as part of the 2023 AABANY Fall Conference/NAPIPA Annual Conference. TAP offers junior lawyers a unique opportunity to hone their trial skills under the guidance of experienced mentors. This year, we will conduct TAP in a hybrid format, with two Zoom webinars followed by a mock trial exercise in-person at the Fall Conference. CLE credit will be awarded to participants but only if you attend the Fall Conference and participate in the mock trial exercises. Attendance at both webinars is highly encouraged, but if you can only make one of them before the Fall Conference, you will earn CLE credit for the webinar that you actually attend.
More details appear below the flyer.
TAP will consist of three parts:
Wednesday, Sept. 13, 6 pm, Zoom: Cross-Examinations and Closing Statements
Presented by:
Joe Gim, Chief of Criminal Court, Kings County District Attorney’s Office
Sam Yee, Attorney, New York Police Department
This program will focus on the art of cross examinations and closing statements. Sam Yee and Joe Gim, both seasoned TAP veterans, will share their expertise in how to formulate a strong cross examination and potentially corner them into a “gotcha” situation if the facts permit. You will also learn how to tie the facts from direct and cross examinations into a strong summation that moves the jury.
NY CLE Credit
1.5 Skills credit, transitional/non-transitional
Wednesday, Sept. 20, 6 pm, Zoom: Opening Statements and Direct Examinations
Presented by:
Hon. James Cho, U.S. Magistrate Judge, Eastern District of New York
Manisha Sheth, Partner, Quinn Emanuel
This program will focus on how to give effective direct examinations and opening statements. Hear from a Federal Magistrate Judge/former Assistant US Attorney, and from a seasoned trial lawyer, on how to open a case with a compelling opening statement that whets a jury’s appetite and entices them to want to learn more about your case. The faculty will also help you craft a direct examination that helps you shine a spotlight on your witness and craft questions to highlight the most pertinent and compelling points in your case.
NY CLE Credit
1.5 Skills credit, transitional/non-transitional
Saturday, Sept. 23, 9:00 am, in-person, at Fordham Law School
Keynote Speech by Brian Lee, Executive Assistant District Attorney, Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office
Mock Trial, Small Group Breakout Sessions
During the in-person portion of TAP, participants will be paired in small groups to conduct a mock trial exercise. They will receive the problem a week before the Fall Conference and will get to put into practice the techniques taught in the Zoom webinars.
NY CLE Credit
4.5 Skills credit, transitional/non-transitional
Again, attendance at one or both Zoom webinars before the Fall Conference is highly encouraged, but you may register for the Fall Conference even if you are not able to attend either webinar. You must have come prepared for the mock trial exercises by reviewing the problem materials and meeting with your partner to prepare in advance of the Fall Conference. You must have registered by no later than September 18th, 2023, so that we can pair you up with a partner.
PLEASE SEE THE CHART BELOW FOR PRICES.
Please register here and make payment by no later than Sept. 18.
Because TAP is expected to take up the bulk of your day on Saturday, Sept. 23, you will not be able to attend the morning programs and the first afternoon session of non-TAP programming, but you should be able to attend the second afternoon session, which starts after 4 pm. You can attend the plenary lunch session. You are welcome to stay for the cocktail reception (included in the all-inclusive registration), but if you would like to attend the NAPIPA Scholarship Banquet, that is a separate registration and payment napipa.org/scholarship-banquet-registration/, and it will be held in Chinatown, so you should plan on departing the cocktail reception early to attend the banquet.
